To understand why targeting your emails is important, it's useful to understand how activists end up on your Action Network Group and mailing list to begin with- and the different groups they may fall into. Your local party mailing list within Action Network is likely to include a mixture of these types of activists:
- Current Active Members who live in your local party area.
- Previously Active Members who live(d) in your local party area.
- A mixture of Current & Previously Active Members from other local parties who have signed up to hear updates from your local party when completing an action- such as when signing a petition or making a donation.
- Non-members who have completed an action created by your local party.
You may wish to send emails that actively target local members- for an Action Day, for example. Or you may wish to share something which targets all of your supporters, who have signed up to hear from you. Action Network has powerful email targeting tools which will allow you to include or exclude activists based on many different conditions.
If you continuously target emails that aren't relevant to some of your activists this may lead to them unsubscribing, or marking your emails as
Spam.
In this guide we'll show you how to set up a Query which targets only your local party members with a current paid subscription, and how to use that Query when targeting an email.
Setting Up Your Query
1. From the top navigation bar click on
PEOPLE. Hover over
Queries and click on the
+ icon to the right.
2. On the next page the first thing you'll need to do is name your Query. Try to use a descriptive title so any other Action Network users will be able to see who is included in the Query.
3. Using the Query Builder below add your first rule. This should be based on the rule
Field Value includes
Membership_Status with value
Current
Be careful to choose the correct Field name. For example choose local_party, not local party and Membership_Status not Membership Status. You can see a list of the fields updated centrally here.
4. Click on
+ Add Rule in the top right of the Query Builder to add a new rule below the first. This second rule should be based on the condition
Field Value includes
Local_Party with the value of your local party name.
You can use this same Query to target activists at a regional level by using the
Regional_Party field in place of
Local_Party.
5. Click the SAVE QUERY button in the bottom right, and your Query will be set up and ready to use.
1. Create your email as normal. On the email targeting page make sure the toggle switch in the top right is set to
QUERY MODE.
2. Choose your Query from the drop-down menu on the row labeled
Import Query and click on
Import.
3. The page will refresh and your saved Query will have been imported.
4. Click the button marked SAVE, PREVIEW & SEND in the bottom right.
5. You'll be presented with a preview of your email on the next page. Once you've checked it and you're happy with it you can scroll to the bottom where you'll see how many activists the email will be sent to, and proceed to send or schedule your email.
