MODX: Template Variables

MODX: Template Variables

Each of the pages on your website have a tab in the Editor pane called Template Variables. This tab allows you to customise the basic website template for your own Local Party. In most cases this is where you will specify what options are displayed on the page such as right-hand menus, social media links and page specific content.

Home Page Template Variables

These Template Variables are found only on your Home Page:

  • All Site Settings: settings which apply to the whole website.
  • Links: website wide links that specify your Donate, Sign Up, and external social media links. See the examples below.
  • News Settings: settings which provide links to your regional party news page and the national party news page.

The only one which needs to be changed (if it hasn’t already been changed) is the regional news page. These are:
  • Eastern: 2867
  • East Midlands: 3374
  • London: 3360
  • North East: 3238
  • North West: 3334
  • South East: 3373
  • South West: 4752
  • West Midlands: 3375
  • Yorkshire & Humber: 4764
  • Settings for Blog: settings specific for a website blog (most websites don’t have this).

Other Page Template Variables

These Template Variables groupings are found on most pages of your website;
  • Events.
  • Page Settings: Settings specific to that page such as whether to display a Banner or which Facebook thumbnail to use.
  • Right Hand Column: This is where you specify which content including menus appear in the Right Hand Column of the page
  • Site Cache: You can normally ignore this setting unless your page contains dynamically updating content

Editing Template Variables

Most of the Template Variables have clear instructions on which parts of the website they control. For instance the Links tab available on your Home Page allows you to specify important website and social media links.
Most fields such as YouTube Video below can be edited just by typing into the box.
Links should include the page ID (which you’ll find next to the page name in the Document Tree).
