How To Tag Activists Based On A Form Response

How To Tag Activists Based On A Form Response

It is possible to Tag Activists based on responses to Form Questions. The method is slightly different depending on if the Question has been built in the Question Library or if it's been created in the Form Editor, but both methods have the same result.
Before you start you'll need to create the Tags you want to use. Check this guide to find out how: Creating Tags in Action Network
You can tag people based on their responses to the following Question types:
  1. Checkbox Groups
  2. Radio Button Groups
  3. Dropdown Menus

Tag Activists Based On Answers To Questions In The Question Library

1. From the START ORGANIZING menu click on DETAILS.

The Start Organizing Menu, showing options for Actions, People, Details, and Support.

2. In the menu that appears move your mouse cursor over Questions & Custom Fields and click on the + icon that appears.

3. On the following page select the Question type you want to create.

4. The related fields for that Question type will appear automatically. In this example, we'll be looking at Radio Buttons.

5. By default this Question will store responses in a Custom Field. As we want to Tag Activists based on their responses we just need to click on the red text that says "Or, tag an activist".

6. The fields on the page will change to capture the information required to Tag Activists.

7. Fill in the fields for your Question. The different fields can be explained like this:
  1. Administrative Title: This would be the name of the Question as seen by other Action Network admins.
  2. Label: This is the name of the Question as seen by Activists when completing a Form.
  3. Option Label: This is the name of the option the Activist can choose.
  4. Option Tag: This is the tag that will be applied to the Activist Record of any respondent.

The ADD NEW QUESTION screen filled in with options for a single radio button response.

8. To add more options to the list click on + Add Another Radio Button and fill in the fields that appear. Repeat this step for every additional option you want to add.

9. Once you've added all the options you need just click on the button labelled CREATE QUESTION. The Question will be saved and can be added to any Form created in Action Network.

Tag Activists Based On Answers To Questions Created In The Form Builder

1. From the Edit Form page click on the Question type you want to use from the section called Blank Questions, and drag it into your form.

2. Click on or around the new Question that you've just added and the options for it will be displayed.

3. Under the top field you'll see some text that reads "Or, tag an activist". Click on this text. There's no need to complete the Name field.

4. In the box below, named Label, add the Question text you wish respondents to see.

5. In the box below add in your options in the format X|Y, where X is the text option visible to respondents and Y is the corresponding Tag that will be applied to their Activist Record. For example, someone selecting Kiwi below in the form designed below will be tagged with the Hairy Fruit Lover Tag. Unlike when creating Questions in the Question Library you don't need to create Tags in advance. If you haven't set one up Action Network will use any text after | to create a new Tag when someone first selects that option.
You can find the | symbol on most keyboards on the backslash (\) key. Just press Shift & \ at the same time.

6. Once you've added all the options you need and you're happy with the rest of the Question settings just hit SAVE at the bottom of the Question box.
