What Is 2-Factor Authentication & Should I Enable It?

As part of our commitment to securing member data we'll be rolling out 2FA across Action Network Groups. To find out more, check this guide: When Will My Action Network Group Be Enrolled In Two Factor Authentication (2FA/MFA)?

What Is 2-Factor Authentication?

2-factor authentication is an added layer of security. When logging into Action Network with 2-Factor Authentication enabled you'll receive a code via a free App called Authy, or via SMS (Text Message). You'll be asked to enter this code when you log into Action Network to prove you are the person attempting to log in.

Should I Enable 2 Factor Authentication?

We recommend enabling 2-Factor Authentication to all users. If ever your password is compromised and somebody attempts to log in using your details they won't be able to access your account unless they also have access to your mobile phone.
If you are an Action Network admin you have access to a considerable amount of identifying information relating to your activists, some of which may be sensitive. We encourage you to enable 2-Factor Authentication as soon as you are able to protect the data of those in your Action Network Group.

How Do I Enable 2-Factor Authentication?

1. From any page within Action Network click on your profile photo or icon on the top right-hand side of the screen. From the pop-out menu that appears select Edit Your Profile.

2. Scroll down, and on the left, you will see a section labelled 2-Factor Authentication. Select Register For 2-Factor Authentication. On the next screen select your country from the drop-down list, and enter your mobile phone number in the box below. Then click REGISTER VIA AUTHY.

3. You will receive a text message to the number you entered with a link to install the Authy App. Install the app and follow the instructions to get set up. Once the Authy App is ready you'll see a numerical code on the screen. This is your Token and should be entered into the box labelled YOUR AUTHY TOKEN.
This Token doesn't last long. If you don't enter it in time a new Token will automatically be generated. You can see a countdown bar at the top of the Authy App which will show how long until the Token expires. If you're unable to install the Authy app you'll instead receive a token via SMS.

4. 2-Factor Authentication is now set up. Whenever you log in to Action Network from now on you'll be prompted for a new Token.
For security, if you change your phone or otherwise lose access to your 2-Factor device, you will be unable to log in. You can install 2-Factor on multiple devices using the Authy App and you can manage your devices. We recommend taking extra care to ensure you don't lose access to your account.

Where Can I Get The Authy App?

You'll be sent a link to download Authy as part of the registration process for 2-Factor Authentication, but if you ever need to download the app you can find it on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
