Useful Queries To Make Campaigning Easier

What Are Queries?

Queries allow you to gather together activists who share common attributes based on tags, actions and field values. They can be set up once and then imported into reports and email targeting to save you having to create the same targeting rules repeatedly.

This article assumes you already know how to create Queries and gives you examples of the conditions you'd need to set for each Query. If you don't know how to set up a Query, then check out this article:  Using The Action Network Query Builder.

All Current Members

This Query is the one you're likely to use the most when it comes to Email Targeting, and should also return all members with voting rights. It is based on the simple rule Local_Party is equal to your Local Party name and Membership_Status has the value Current.
To get started targeting emails to your current members check this guide:  How To Send An Email Which Targets Only Your Current Local Members

All Current & Pending Members Local Party Members

If a new member joins and selects Direct Debit as their payment method they'll have a Membership_Status of Pending until we request their first payment. If you want to make sure you're including these members in you targeting then just set up a Query based on the condition Filed Value Local_Party with the value of your local party name. Then add a group with two rules Membership Status with value Current, or Membership_Status with value Pending.

All Grace Members

If a member's renewal date has passed and no payment has been received they will move into Grace, These members will be contacted automatically to ask them to update their payment details, so there's no need for intervention from local party officers. However, if you'd like to target Grace members you just need to set up a Query which targets activists with a Local_Party value equal to your local party name, and a Membership_Status of Grace.

All Non-Members

To capture all non-members on your list just create a query that excludes all activists with a Membership_Status of Current and Pending. This will capture all activists both within and outside your local party area.

Members Who Don't Live In My Local Party Area

To target members who previously lived in your local party area, or members from outside your local party area who have subscribed to updates just set the Query to exclude members with a Local_Party value equal to that of your local party and include activists with a Membership_Status of Current or Pending.

Local Party Volunteers

Currently there is no centrally maintained field for volunteers. We recommend creating tags for your volunteers and using a Query that targets Current members in your local party area who have the volunteer tag(s) you've created.
Under some circumstances you may want to welcome volunteers who aren't current members, in which case just adjust the Query accordingly.

Local Party Officers

To target only your local party officers simply create a Query that targets them based on the Local Officer tag for your local party.

Members You Can Call

To establish which members you can contact by phone you need to create a Query based on the following:
  1. Their Local_Party field is set to your Local_Party
  2. Their Membership_Status is field is equal to the Membership Status you're targeting.
  3. They have any value stored in the phone number field(s).
  4. Their do_not_phone value is not equal to TRUE.
Please be aware that although historic phone fields have been imported into AN they are no longer updated. You can add in any number of previous phone number fields to capture all possible numbers, but you may have a lower success rate in contacting members using numbers from these old fields. To find out which fields are currently maintained just check this guide:  Which custom fields are synced to Activists on Action Network from the Green Party's national database?

The example Query below targets both Current & Pending Members, who have a value stored in either the Mobile Number or Home_Phone Fields.
