This guide covers adding your Green Party email to Apple Mail on macOS. Apple Mail handles IMAP accounts well, but its setup wizard may not auto-detect the Stackmail servers, so you will may need to enter the settings manually.
If you have done this before and need the server details, skip to the quick settings reference below.

Before You Start

Use IMAP, not POP3

When asked to choose an account type, always select IMAP. Do not select POP3 - it downloads emails to a single device and can remove them from the server, which means other devices and webmail will no longer see them. If you are not sure what this means, see Should I Use POP3 or IMAP For My Green Party Email?

You will need three things:
  1. Your Green Party email address (e.g. yourrole@localparty.greenparty.org.uk).
  2. The password you were given, or that you set through webmail.
  3. A Mac running macOS (Apple Mail is pre-installed).

Setting Up Your Email

On modern macOS (Ventura and later), email accounts are added through System Settings rather than inside the Mail app itself.
  1. Open System Settings (Apple menu > System Settings).
  2. Click Internet Accounts in the sidebar.
  3. Click Add Account.
  4. Select Other (at the bottom of the list - do not select Microsoft Exchange, Google, or iCloud).
  5. Select Mail account.
  6. Enter the following:
    a. Name: Your name as you want it to appear on outgoing emails
    b. Email Address: Your full Green Party email address
    c. Password: Your email password
  7. Click Sign In. macOS will try to auto-detect the settings. If it cannot, it will ask you to enter them manually.
  8. If prompted, enter:
    a. Account Type: IMAP
    b. Incoming Mail Server: imap.stackmail.com
    c. Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.stackmail.com
  9. Click Sign In again.
Tip

If macOS asks which apps you want to use with this account, tick Mail and untick everything else (Contacts, Calendars, Notes). Stackmail only provides email.

  1. Open Mail and check that your Green Party inbox appears in the sidebar.
If the port numbers were not set automatically, you can verify them by going to Mail > Settings > Accounts > your Green Party account > Server Settings. Confirm incoming is 993 with SSL/TLS and outgoing is 465 with SSL/TLS.

Verifying It Worked

  1. Check that your inbox loads and any existing emails appear.
  2. Send a test email to yourself to confirm both sending and receiving work.
  3. Check your Sent mailbox - the test email should appear there too.

Troubleshooting

Apple Mail says it cannot verify the server identity: You may see a certificate warning because the shared hosting certificate does not match your custom domain name. Click Show Certificate, then Continue to accept it. This is safe - the connection is still encrypted.
Authentication keeps failing: Make sure your username is your full email address. If you recently changed your password through Stackmail webmail, use the new password.
Mail app is not showing the account: If you added the account but Mail does not show it, go back to System Settings > Internet Accounts, select the account, and make sure Mail is ticked.
Can receive but cannot send: Open Mail > Settings > Accounts > your account > Server Settings. Under Outgoing Mail Server, make sure the server is smtp.stackmail.com, port 465, with SSL/TLS and Password authentication using the same credentials as incoming.

If none of these solve it, raise a ticket and include your macOS version and any error messages you see.
