When asked to choose an account type, always select IMAP. Do not select POP3 - it downloads emails to a single device and can remove them from the server, which means other devices and webmail will no longer see them. Google is removing the ability to add external email accounts to Gmail's web interface (mail.google.com). The steps above are for the Gmail app on your phone, which still supports IMAP accounts.
